DIY Floral Garland

After yesterday’s adventure foraging, it’s time to put together our centerpieces. With foraged greenery we added large and length spring blooms in ivory and blush tones. We knew these colors would pop and pair beautifully with the seafoam napkins we chose. For the tables, we wanted to have long and luxurious floral garlands that draped over the sides. Because of this, each arrangement would measure over 6 feet. (Remember this when foraging greenery as you will need a lot to make such long garland. While this project may take a bit of time, the skill level is actually quite low. I had never attempted a floral project on this scale before and was able to pull it off without a problem.

Supplies:

  • Various kinds of greenery
  • Spring blooms (we used roses, stock, hydrangea, wildflowers, and snapdragons)
  • Wire cutters
  • Spool of florist wire
  • Floral tape
  • Tape measurer
  • Shears

Directions:

To begin, sort all the greenery you have foraged. We stacked ours into piles by kind, making arranging a bit easier. To keep our garage from getting too dirty, we laid down a tarp. We knew that our centerpieces would be around 6 feet in length and we wanted to make the garland ahead of time, only adding the blooms the day of the event. In light of this our assembly process was a bit different.

Building swags of greenery in our hand we built each one full and with six varieties of greenery. Once satisfied with the scale, volume, and breadth, we wired the stems firmly together and clipped the excess wire off. Using a tape measurer, we placed each bunch of greenery on the ground, making sure each centerpiece exceeded the required length.

Once all of the bunches of greenery were assembled, we wired them together. This is where laying it out on the ground becomes incredibly helpful. To cover up wire, add in additional sprigs of greenery or know this is where you will place your large blooms.

For the day of the event: Trim and process all of your floral before arriving to your venue. With sharp shears, trim and wire on your blooms on each garland. I would recommend doing this outside on clean pavement or in the trunk of someone’s vehicle. Once all the blooms are wired on, place each garland on the table. You’re done!

(My favorite part of this project? Each completed garland only cost $20. That’s right. $20. A huge visual statement with not a lot of cash spent.)
