Monday Thoughts: Vulnerability

Over the past months I’ve been on a journey of discovering vulnerability. What does vulnerability look like in a community where it feels like a norm, but can feel forced? Is vulnerability given because it’s expected and solely for the sake of vulnerability? What does living and leading wholeheartedly mean for me? I’m learning that it looks different for each individual, but it is still a challenge for my heart to be fully revealed to others. I don’t know why, but it just is. Vulnerability in life, in relationship, and as a creative is beautiful and the most authentic form of myself. It means giving trust and connection to others, regardless of circumstances, choosing to see intrinsic value in others and place investment in them.

Vulnerability. It’s a strange thing. While as individuals it is something we desire for authentic relationship and connection, it is something we often exploit as a society. Something we run away from. We know we have things to contribute to the world, beautiful words to compose, great compositions to make and capture, and platforms that arise to express them. Yet, often it takes risk and courage to step out on the stage of life. Will our critics boo us off the stage? Will our own fears and insecurities shock us into keeping our jaw clenched tight, not letting a single word out? Will this be our only shot? Is it better to be perfect or to be honest? For most of us there are often times where we have  stepped out, had courage, and it blew up. When that happens, we secretly make a vow to ourselves that we won’t risk again. The hurt was too great, so we lead safe, secure, seemingly boring lives.

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.” -Brene Brown

This Monday embrace your vulnerability, the beautiful things that you long to share with the world, and to step out and create something stunning for this time.
