When it comes to styling, I’ve become slightly obsessed. Whether it’s the perfectly laid out Instagram photo, prepping for a shoot for the blog, or providing art direction for a shoot for a major brand, I’ve found that styling is the essence of creativity, layering, color and texture. I have Pinterest boards filled with styled images, gorgeous flat lays, and well thought out interiors. If styling is done well, it can take an ordinary space and with a few touches make it look absolutely extraordinary.
As I looked to the main bathroom it was time to refresh the space. We purchased this amazing set of shelves locally from @desertsedgeco and hung them above our towel rack. I thought it was the perfect pairing. Keeping the pine shelves somewhat raw by sealing them with paste wax, placed above our Pendleton towels from the National Park collection.
Styling in the bathroom has to be a collision of form and function. Excessive items aren’t needed or really wanting to be a space where people take care of business, if you know what I mean. By filling the shelves with utilitarian items, that also serve as collections, we keep our styling simple, functional, and well thought through.
Add a moment of nature.
This might sound silly, but plants clean the air and that’s always a great idea in the bathroom. We added a small potted plant to the shelf that will thrive with minimal water and light. (Basically light the window above the shower and the steam from showering keep this plant thriving.) For an additional moment of color we added a few artificial blooms in a small white bud vase.
Think in collections.
The ladies in our home stay looking their best with nail polishes and fend off icky items with essential oils. Rather than having these collections stowed away and hidden, highlight these collections by strategically placing them. To keep everything cohesive we only placed one brand of essential oils and nail polishes on the shelving, allowing visual unity in the collection through simple repetition of shape and packaging.
Where form and function collide.
The rest of our shelving was filled out with products we use on the daily. Stacked wash cloths for use and a candle, clear glasses with cotton swabs and cotton rounds. By keeping the storage containers in the same limited color palette, it keeps the items unified without much effort.
