Winter Skin + Hair Essentials

With the thick of winter, it brings with it dry weather, days snowed in, and all the layers. While I’ve lived in California for a while, I grew up in the midwest where humidity brought the necessity humidity my skin and hair craves. After 5 years in, it’s taken a while for my skin to balance itself out. How does my makeup routine and essentials adjust to the season?

Keep reading for all of our essentials to rock with any look this winter season.

Skincare:
There’s nothing better than the basics of good skincare. If you don’t have a good foundation, no amount of makeup can fix this problem. Over the years I’ve searched and searched for great and natural products. I’ve refined my regimen while choosing quality over quantity.

Aesop Parsley Seed Cleanser
With extreme climate in NorCal, my skin loves a good cleanse. This poppy seed cleanser is a great exfoliant and leaves your skin feeling wonderfully smooth. Perfect for clarifying and skin that has been surrounded by air pollution, it’s a great clarifier without stripping your skin of oils. Your skin is fresh and soft after use.

Aesop Clay Mud Mask
I use this once a week, particularly when prone to breakouts. You’ll see immediate results that firm your skin, reduce your pores and brings impurities to the surface. Incorporated into my evening routine, it’s a great way to practice self care. With 10 minutes and a great book, I start relaxing, turn off blue light and love my skin a bit more.

Aesop Resurrection Hand Cream

Say goodbye to cracked, chapped, and dry hands. With this hand cream, its lush thickness keeps hands moisturized throughout the day.

Makeup:
In the summer months, I prefer a natural look with a tinted moisturizer with SPF, lip balm, and mascara. In a few minutes I’m ready to head out the door and have a look that will last in the triple digit temps. In the winter, I keep things light, but build out looks a bit further, highlighting stunning taupe colors and a fuller coverage foundation.

Naked 2 Palette
It’s a household favorite and for good reason. I love this palette for the variety of looks it provides and the stunning taupe shades. In summer, I love to rock a lighter and more minimal makeup that is perfect for hot weather. For the fall, I use a fuller look and these colors pair beyond well with a variety of skin tones and coloring. These colors are great for layering and building color with ease.

Bare Minerals Pro Foundation
I’ve been a Bare Minerals user for years. It was the first mineral makeup on the market and looks great whether you prefer a natural or more made up face. I now prefer fuller coverage foundation to even out my skin tone. This foundation and the brush are absolutely amazing. The finish is light and dewy without feeling overly heavy.

Glossier Balm Dot Com in Cherry
While Glossier has a cult-like following, their products are worth the hype. I purchased this lip balm in the amazing cherry tint when visiting their New York showroom. This is one of my favorite products and is always in my bag. With fall breezes and spending more time indoors (heaters are great but are known for causing dry skin), begin by preparing your lips now with the moisture it needs.

Haircare:
As a girl who lived in the South, hair is very, very important. Hair goes with you every day and is the perfect accessory. I take time to give my hair both the nutrition it needs (through whole foods) and with the products I use.

Shampoo
Aveda Scalp Benefits
My scalp has always been notoriously dry while my hair has a natural wave and somewhat coarse texture. Dry, corse, and flaky. With the seasons, this shampoo is an absolute lifesaver. Using burdock root, echinacea and sage, it nourishes the scalp while cleansing the hair.

Dry Shampoo
Livingproof
The phrase, “Living off of coffee and dry shampoo,” is the anthem of many of my days. For the days when you don’t have time for a wash and style, but don’t want to wear a hat. I adore this dry shampoo and the ways it immediately cleanses your roots. Unlike other dry shampoos on the market, this one is filled with moisture and you can feel it working at the root. It does serious work and once to be brushed stretches hair washing day a bit further.

Conditioner
Malin + Goetz Cilantro Conditioner
I first discovered this conditioner at a recent stay at the Ace Hotel in Portland. They offered these as toiletries in our room and I was hooked. It smells amazing and is incredible for your hair (I use it for multiple washes throughout the week.) It moisturizes the hair without weighing down the roots.

Hair mask
Aveda Dry Remedy
As someone who has color treated hair, this mask is amazing as a deep conditioner. I use it weekly. With a quarter size amount, a little bit goes a long way. I apply from tip to root (my tips are where I have the most damage) and let it sit on my hair for around 10 minutes, while shaving my body and completing my other shower routine.
