Creating the Perfect Christmas List

A knitted sweater where one arm is three inches longer than the other, dollar store figurines, and tacky clothes your great aunt thought were just perfect. The days of Christmas are upon us and while the thought is what counts, we’ve all experienced receiving Christmas gifts that were far from what we desired. While it was perfectly acceptable to write a long list to Santa as a child, how can you tactfully tell relatives what you might like and steer them in the right direction? Here are some tips for creating the perfect Christmas list:

1. Sometimes you like surprises: The college roommate, best friend, and people that are in your closer circles have good taste and know what you like. These are people that I love being surprised by. They never disappoint and it’s always fun to have a few surprises under the tree.

2. Have a few gift ideas ready: When it comes to family gift exchanges, family really does want to give you a gift that you will enjoy. It’s always a good idea to have a list of ideas on hand to give them. (Tip: Give one idea to each person and make sure you don’t repeat the same. If you do, you might have a lot of multiples to return.) In our family, our parents still gift us with a large amount on Christmas Day. I use the amazon wish list feature throughout the year for items I might like, but don’t want to purchase. Around October, I refine this list with notes, priority, various price points, and guiding comments. Then when my parents or relatives ask, I just direct them to my Amazon wish list labeled Christmas 2014.

3. Gift yourself: I’ve become a firm believer in this over the years. Around this time of year, you will find great sales on items you really do love and could enjoy. Every Christmas I give myself one gift. I’m not a regular shopper and so it’s really nice to be able to treat myself this time of year.

4. Be a gracious receiver: Aunt Marge might give you with fuzzy socks again, but it is important to focus on shared time and experiences with family and friends. Identify some experiences you would like to have with others this holiday season and make it happen. Maybe it is a cookie swap, girl’s craft night, or dinner party. Focus on enjoying the time with loved ones and keep things in perspective.
