The Top Question I Get Asked in Business

When it comes to the blogging world and running your own business, over the years I’ve been asked countless questions. More than anything, it isn’t the experienced entrepreneur that’s needing to figure things out. Rather it’s someone who is trying to make a bit of extra cash, launch a side hustle, or turn a passion into a profit.

I always get asked the question, “Where and How Do I Begin?”

As a recovering perfectionist here, can I tell you something? Regardless of where you begin or what you offer, your business will never be perfect or linear. There will always be something you want to improve, ways you long to evolve, and predictions that look different.

What is the answer? Don’t try to get it perfect before you decide start. Start somewhere. Keep on moving forward. And if you fail, fail forward. When I started this little space on the Internet over four years ago, I started sitting down with local business owners. Whether they were makers, coffee shop owners, or artists, there was a repeated question that remained at the end of each interview. I always ask them, “If there’s one piece of business advice you could give to someone starting out, what would it be.” Without hesitation, every business owner states, “I wish I would have started earlier.” Take it from my story, I’ve found countless moments in life where it was too painful. Where I was forced into a crossroads to make something better for myself. I wish I would have had the courage to start something new before things were so dramatic. Even this blogging space, I had talked about doing it for 3 years before I ever actually did it. 3 years. As I was spending 6 weeks, with a to-do list a mile long, and finding myself living in a work whole, I could quickly compare myself to others. Would I be the best? If I wasn’t the absolute best in my field would my site matter? Would people even come? Could I find consistent readership outside of my mom? While it sounds laughable, much like the three years of prior, these voices of doubt and comparison could have just as easily squelched the dream of this space before it ever launched.

So what are you waiting for? A fresh year? Another day, week, or month?

Today, may you dare. Dare to dream the big dreams that have been locked up inside of you. May you dare to create something even if it sucks. May you value others and make their life better. Relook at those resolutions from over six months ago. Start something today. We’re right here with you.
