Cinco De Mayo Gathering

With May 5th just around the corner, we’re celebrating Cinco De Mayo in its fullness. With a splash of color, fresh spring blooms and contrast of texture, this gathering was inspired by seaside days in Baja California. Filled with both natural and nautical textures, this look is tied together by layered textiles, pottery, and some favorite cactuses and succulents. The result? An unexpected gathering filled with delicious food and drink.

The Table

With this table I wanted to play with the idea of both a woven jute runner and striped placemats. I love the addition of both and the color and texture both bring to the table. On the runner, I continued the orangey color with the addition of terracotta pots. To anchor the runner I placed a glass and metal lantern that reminded me of metal star lanterns you’d expect in cantinas lining cobblestone streets. If you’re wanting to take the look a step further, pick up mini terracotta pots that can be used as place card holders for each setting. (I love the idea of a mini flowering cactus at each setting on top of the plate next to the napkin. For additional texture, I placed round glazed ceramics from Target’s Hearth and Hand collection and finished the look with a casual knotted napkin. (Another nautical touch, with a play on Fisherman knots.) Adding to the high/low look of this setting, I finished it out with a gold rimmed stemless wine glass for margaritas, and gold flatware. For the rest of the table, I pulled together some of my favorite cacti, succulents, and air plants from around the house. Once they were all placed in additional terracotta pots, the look was cohesive. For a finishing touch, I foraged a few spray roses from the property. The vivid fuschia color with yellow centers was the perfect sweet moment. Adding wooden bowls of chips, individual dipping bowls of salsa, and various toppings, the rest of the table was used to showcase the food.

Food

While I love mixing things up for celebrations, with this gathering I kept things simple. Perfect for a Friday night gathering after getting home from work, this menu includes sheet pan chicken fajitas, whole wheat tortillas, homemade salsa, and margaritas (peach and blood orange). They’re classics, absolute favorites, and are sure to please any crowd. Make the margaritas, salsa, and tortilla dough the night beforehand to expedite time in the kitchen.

We loved this simple gathering and hope you find friends to gather around the table this week. Enjoy the celebration!
