Deck the Halls

Today I decided to give you a behind-the-scenes look into the changes into my home for Christmas. Living in Redding, our options are somewhat limited to basic big box stores to out fit our house with the merriest of decorations. Living in a rental I knew the budget I wanted to set for decor and also knew that I wanted our space to feel like home. Using various DIYs, found and foraged objects, I was able to achieve the Northern California vibe, having modern-take on a traditional color scheme of red and gold.

Another confession about holiday decorating. I’m allergic to pine. It’s sad but true. However, the best part about front door wreaths? I don’t have to breathe it in. This wreath was created by a local forest and brought about some fond memories for some of the ladies in our house. It is the perfect first impression to all our guests during the holiday season.

Tip: Go big or go home. For our home, this is the only outdoor decoration we have so I decided to keep this in mind when choosing the scale of the wreath. Bigger is always better.

Another wreath? You’ve got it. This one is situated in the entry way over our console table. I love the subtle glimmer and artisan nature of it. It looks not only created, but curated. If found that the combination of textures and use of various metals were on point. Copper, kraft paper, and gold. All good things. Check, check, and check. Want to make it? Click here.

And yes. I may have gone a bit paper flower crazy, but wanted to incorporate this good idea in our tree too.

The stockings were hung with care. They’re miniature too, which adds an extra dose of cute. Using Instagram pictures, each lady’s stocking was personalized with a book paper letter and metallic foil clothespin. We don’t have a fireplace, so I created a feature wall hanging eight stockings on a ribbon, over the couch.

While mistletoe is cute over the doorway, it can create quite a few awkward moments. Particularly at house parties throughout the holiday season. You know that guy that’s been creepily looking at you all year and somehow showed up to the party? With the mistletoe, he’s going to seize this long-awaited moment and is making a b-line toward you. We’ve all been there and would like to forget those evenings. Instead we opted for a few laser cut paper stars over our ached. Problem solved!

I don’t like to leave any surface in the house feeling scrooged. The bathrooms are no exception. This year, I added a holiday scented handmade soap, a candle, and one of the easiest projects I’ve done to date. To make these mason car snow globes, place small figurine and tree in the jar. Add fake snow (for a more natural look use salt) and screw the lid back on top. It’s beautiful and done in 5 minutes.

The crowning touch on any holiday decor is the table. Here common memories, delicious food, and beautiful conversation is shared. It deserves a bit more love than the afterthought it sometimes receives. This rustic and casual look was elevated with flowers and the use of candles. Using classic elements such as plaid and birch, deeply rooted in tradition were made incredibly cool by the use of Instagram placecards and the use of an offbeat color combination in the plaid runner. No traditional tartan here! Click here to make the placecards. Make the centerpiece here.

Thank you so much for sharing my holiday decor with you! Who knows maybe next year I’ll have a white tree with hot pink and gold ornaments to mix things up. Then again-probably not. What are some of the ways that you have decorated this year?
